Can I give a shout out to librarians? On my recent author's visit to Buffalo, New York I met so many dynamic librarians who gave me rides in snowy weather, served me delicious lunch, and gave me insight into their jobs. I have a soft spot for librarians. In my picture book, Lailah sneaks out of the cafeteria at lunchtime and heads too... the library. Amongst all the books she feels safe and is able to open up to the librarian about Ramadan and how she misses her friends. In Buffalo, I met a librarian who hand delivers books to her refugee students whose parents don't allow them to leave their homes after school because it's not safe. (It's probably fitting that this librarian is a kindred spirit -- her name is Anne with an E and she had red hair!) I met this librarian Kristy (pictured here) who effortlessly hosted school visits in her public downtown library and was so welcoming. In such cold areas like Buffalo, homeless people drop in to the library. I love how welcoming the librarians are and how effortlessly they shuffle between patrons, welcoming everyone. I met another librarian who upon seeing my book said that he would welcome the Ramadan students in the library and almost got in trouble with the union for this for giving up his lunch! I meant another librarian who welcomed students (up to 70!) during Ramadan as well and taught them how to shelve books. I love librarians! Back in Atlanta, I already miss them all. #kidlit #reemflections

Enjoyed my author's visit and connecting with students, teachers, and librarians. Got to see snow flurries in Buffalo, NY! Glad to be back home again in warmer temperatures!
